General Consulting Projects

Obsidian are engaged in a long term project with DSE to build a tool that will help manage the planning schemes for Victoria. This tool, ZAPP, will enable over 70 councils and other regulatory bodies to build, submit and work with amendments to the Victorian planning scheme. ZAPP will track the schemes and amendments to the schemes. ZAPP will also handle the complex workflow required by the different roles, responsibilities and legal requirements surrounding the amendment/planning scheme process.

WEL, a feminist non-party organisation, has been acknowledged as a major political force and is regularly invited to participate by government and non government bodies in a wide range of community affairs. Obsidian designed and created a website and implemented a lightweight content management system for Womens Electoral Lobby, Victora.

PPARS is a project for the DSE, Victoria. It enables easy centralised statistics reporting facilities for councils, and allows easy creation and distribution of reports to the councils as appropriate.

The webapplication allows different vendor software used by the councils to communicate regularly via XML important statistics on planning permits. The webapplication can in turn generate reports based on those statistics for both DSE, Council and public consumption.

Obsidian built and maintains a SNMP billing system for Securetel.

Obsidian provide a range of consulting services to the Productivity Commission in the internet area. Programming and database consulting to enable them to place a searchable index of their publications online for the Australian public. Web design and usability/accessibility consulting for their new website. In addition, Obsidian continue to provide ongoing systems administration skills and advice.

Heiko Ryu are a Melbourne based martial arts school focussing on traditional Goju Karate. Obsidian built, hosts and maintains their website for them.

A webdesign company, Paradigm4 provides solutions for thousands of organisations nation-wide. Obsidian provides a wide range of essential services to Paradigm4, including software development, system administration, code audits, hosting and technical advice.

The Law Faculty of Monash University has an ongoing support contract with Obsidian. Monash Law make use of Obsidian's consulting services to help with internal software (LEX) that Obsidian maintains and further develops for them.

 

Jet Projects

Note: Jet projects often include a large amount of consultation with the customers and customisation of the product to the client's needs and network.

Curtin University in Perth, West Australia, have chosen Jet as the authentication and accounting solution for their campus-wide network. Jet provides linkages between Cisco SSG and Novell LDAP, to effectively control access and usage across their AARNet Internet links. Obsidian are continuing to work with Curtin to grow this solution, with extra phases providing Novell "single-sign-on" capabilities and future development of quota management rules.

Victoria University in Melbourne, Victoria, have implemented the Jet billing system in conjunction with NetIntact's PacketLogic devices to manage network access and back-billing to students and departments. The combination of Jet + PacketLogic provides effective network access control and fine-grained usage tracking. Future enhancements to the quota management rules are planned, to support a sophisticated tiered system of quota allocations and potential student purchase of extra quota facility.

The State Services Commission in New Zealand are tasked with providing vital infrastructure for all New Zealand government Departments. As part of this brief, they set up the "Global Services Network" - a nation-wide infrastructure providing services suitable for Government Departments (high levels of security, VoIP, inter-office links, roaming, and more). Obisdian's "Jet" billing system was selected as the most appropriate system for providing billing of this network, including linkages to LDAP and departmental control of billing break-downs and user management.

Obsidian are currently working with Central Queensland University to help provide them with a billing system to meet their billing requirements. The final billing solution will be operate on campuses across Australia and internationally. The project also involves integration work with Cisco, to support SSG authentication and accounting.

Inter-touch are an international wireless internet access provider. They have access locations across the world including: Australia, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, United Arab Emirates and the UK. Obsidian helped them by providing Jet to help manage their user accounts and billing.

Request Business Solutions

In 2003, Request Broadband selected our Jet ISP Billing System for their retail business unit, Request Business Solutions. Obsidian provided a high level of customisation and support for the billing system, including integration with remote call centre helpdesk systems, intrusion detection hardware, and external sales teams.

Subsequent to Request Broadband's merger with PowerTel in mid-2004, the Request Business Solutions business unit was dissolved and their Jet Billing System project was disbanded.
