Jet in the Tertiary environment
The Jet Billing System solves the problems commonly faced by Universities and tertiary institutions of all sizes.
Complex quota management, allocation of users to cost-centres (departments, faculties, etc.) for reporting and billing, student portal, the ability for users to purchase additional quota, ease of administration, and realtime reporting are just some of the benefits that Jet can bring to your University environment.
Cost Recovery
One of the key drivers for updating your resource accounting capabilities is the ability to recover costs from all users—both students and (optionally) staff.
Complex Quota Management
In a typical university environment, it is desirable for different types of users (e.g. undergraduate students, postgraduate students, staff, etc.) to have different quotas as appropriate for their needs.
Managing complex quotas can be a difficult and time-consuming task. Jet simplifies the creation, application, and administration of resource quotas.
When combined with a traffic management solutions, Jet can also enforce quota policies—by denying or restricting users who reach their quota limit. If supported by the traffic management hardware, users can also have traffic-shaping applied to their access once quota is reached.
Some of the traffic management solutions with which Jet is able to integrate with are:
- SSG from Cisco
- PacketLogic from NetIntact
- NetEnforcer from Allot
Reporting to Cost-centres
Allocate each user against a cost-centre for reporting and cost-recovery. Comprehensive reporting of Organisational Unit quota and usage.
Manage quota and cost-centre changes due to students changing courses at the start of each semester.
Student Portal
From viewing usage history, to purchasing extra quota, Jet's student portal facilitates hands-off user management of students and staff.
Support for Complex Service Plans
Jet provides you with the flexibility to create the user plans that you need, rather than restricting you to offering the plans that a less-capable billing system can handle.
Automated, Real-time Usage Reporting
Usage data from your RADIUS, NetFlow, SSG, or other data source is collected, rated, and allocated to users in real time. Reporting reflects current information—keeping you on top of usage spikes and trends.
Convergent Billing
As infrastructure moves increasingly to an IP-centric basis, the ability to merge reporting and billing for emergent technologies becomes viable. Jet allows you to consolidate records from your VoIP PABX system with your IP traffic data to present a single view of all service usage and associated costs.
Going forward, new resource types can be integrated—such as student photocopy and print cards, on-campus parking, VoIP and PSTN phone calls, cans of Coke...
The list goes on.
Open platforms and standards
Jet is built on proven, open platforms and standards — Python, Zope, and MySQL — and can be deployed on Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris platforms. Support for Oracle® databases is also available.
Access to source code
Customers who purchase the Jet Enterprise product are provided with access to application source code. This both brings peace of mind by removing "vendor lock-in", and facilitates in-house development and extension for those customers with the technical resources to undertake their own development work.
